IT'S ABOUT JUSTICE
Statement of Purpose
I didn't plan this Justice project. It came to me in the early
1990's when an 1812 wooden sculpture of Justice was given to
the Custom House Maritime Museum, then my place of employment.
She was a significant gift for in her early years she stood high
on the local Courthouse roof, a symbol of democracy for our young
republic. Her right hand was elevated, holding the scroll for
learning, the other, outstretched, holding the scales for equality.
When she came to the museum, almost two hundred years later,
she was a bit worn, but still radiating a commanding presence.
As the Director of the institution, I assumed the
responsibility to educate our visitors about her, what this figure
of Justice meant to the people and the nation at that time. For
this interesting routine work assignment, I headed to the library
to seek an appropriate quotation That was the beginning, (soon
to be a quest), of my compilation of Justice quotations. Now,
ten years later I have a treasury of over 1500 quotations from
2200 BC to today and a lot of knowledge about justice, the concept
that is an integral part of everyone's life.
It is this integration of this concept, between
one's interior world and the external world, that led me to recognize
that Justice is about how people think, how they act, how they
perceive the world. From this core, I developed"It's About
Justice, " lectures and courses based on the words of people
for four thousand years. I use these words, these interesting
voices from all over the world, as the foundation, to teach how
we arrived to where we are today, to aid in deciding where we
go tomorrow, what we are as people.
Justice is a great story, her spirit highlighted
with all the human emotions, drama, tragedy and triumphs of human
history. From the quotations you will learn that people have
talked about her, spoken out for her, since the beginning of
recorded history. You will view her itinerary, traveling from
one great civilization to another; how she went underground during
the Dark Ages and the consequences of her absence. You will see
her presence in art, music, poetry, books, governments, astrology,
mythology, philosophy, law, the courthouse, universities, schools
the workplace and in the home. You will hear in the voices of
people, courage, fear, despair, vigilance, truth, mercy, and
love, touching something very deep inside you. You will recognize
Justice as noisy and strident, powerful, demanding and complicated
and when we shout the loudest for her, it is because we are changing,
moving towards new consciousness, new insights about ourselves
and others. You will find Justice within yourself, divine, innate
and intuitive, working to bring out the best in you. You will
know her as a dignified, demanding teacher, an awakener, mentor
and friend. You will discover that there is no end to her bounty,
no refuge from her scorn.
You will know that you are Justice. You, by your
actions and words, will chart her course, for ultimately Justice
is about each of us as individuals and how we choose to honor
ourselves and others.
