Course Outline and Curriculum

"Discite Justitian"
Learn Justice
Publius Virgilius Maro
70-19 B.C.

GOAL: To familiarize students with a broad outline and structure of the philosophical, spiritual, legal, administrative, historical, mythological components of the concept of justice.

To acquaint students with the concept of justice with the use of quotations from 2200 BC through today from multiple disciplines.

Just what is justice?

This is a survey course about the concept of justice. It is structured around lectures based on history, philosophy, mythology, astrology, religion and world cultures. Using quotations about justice, from 2200 BC to the present as a base, the concept is expanded in breadth and depth with art, literature, history, mythology, astrology and philosophy.

It will begin with a survey of how justice has traveled from the ancient world to contemporary life. It will show how the present draws on the past and how the concept of justice evolves as human consciousness expands.

PROCEDURES AND EXPECTATIONS:

1. The full syllabus for the course is available on the web, www.itsaboutjustice.com. For each topic the student will look on the web site to find the assignment and prepare for class by completion of assignment.

2. As an integral part of this course, the student is required to view films that deal with justice and be prepared to write a short paper on how this film relates to our concepts of justice.

3. The student is asked to bring in every week an article from a current newspaper or magazine article that refers to justice. The word justice must appear in the article.

4. The student is required to bring in one quotation a week about justice, who said it, occupation, life dates, country and source.

5. At some time during the course, the student will watch justice in action by going to a court room, prison, police headquarters, mediation session, social justice organization, or other appropriate venue. You will be asked to tell your classmates about your experiences and perceptions.
